How To Style 90’s Sportswear

How To Style 90’s Sportswear

Melbourne’s vintage clothing stores are being digitised and with them the best of 90’s sportswear is now available online. For the first time in recent history vintage fashion may actually overtake fast fashion in popularity. This is in no small part thanks to the revival of 90’s sportswear, the kind that takes us back to early episodes of Dawson’s Creek, basketball legends like Michael Jordan and even the street style of the late Princess Diana. Comfort is cool again but with many vintage clothing stores still closed around Melbourne, or now exclusively online, how do you know what style is best? Well, thankfully the 90’s sportswear look is oversized and loose, so going a size or two up is no problem. Slouchy Champion sweaters, oversized Ralph Lauren polo shirts and vintage band t-shirts that can be worn as mini dresses are all part of the trend.  We will run through some of the key looks of 90’s sportswear so you know what to look for when searching for your own vintage piece:

The Princess Diana

Princess Diana’s sportswear style is nearly as famous as Diana herself. She teamed oversized Varsity jerseys and block colour sweaters with bike shorts, trainers, oversized sunglasses and touches of gold jewellery. Her easy, comfortable and glamorous take on sports style is easy to pull together and suits just about everyone, which might explain why the look is popping up everywhere from Vogue to Pinterest. Our vintage Polo Ralph Lauren sweater is a classic piece that features the kind of bright colour blocking that Diana herself liked to wear.

The Dawson’s Creek

Dawson’s Creek really spearheaded varsity style back in the 90’s and this casual style is having a revival. This look is slouchy, unisex and super nostalgic. You can leave the worst parts of this trend behind (floppy hair, bucket hats, print shirts) and take the best (jerseys, sweaters, oversized jackets) for your own carefree, tree-climbing, hand-holding Cape-side look. Our oversized vintage jackets, American sweaters and vintage cropped t-shirts all fit the bill.

The Sports Star

Looking beyond “fast fashion” influencers to the past for style tips has led us full circle back to some of sport’s greatest stars. 90’s sports style is both on trend and comfortable and no one epitomised this look more than basketball all-star Michael Jordan. Jordan was famous off the court for bringing tailoring and draping to his sporty ensembles. His unique take on sportswear is now hugely popular again, but particularly his penchant for oversized Bulls jerseys and loose structured jackets. Our take on this look is our vintage Champion Bulls jersey and vintage Nike windbreaker.
